Upward Spiral — Branford Marsalis Quartet/Kurt Elling
(Marsalis Music/Okeh)

UpwardSpiral_Cover_1500x1500-webThere’s nothing like a jazz vocalist that phrases like a horn. That’s what’s in store when you listen to this hard swinging quartet join forces with vocalist Kurt Elling, who doesn’t just sing with the band-he swings with it.
Saxophonist Marsalis, pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner and Elling show their versatility and virtuosity on a wide range of songs. Included are covers of Jobim’s “So Tinha de Ser Com Voce,” Sonny Rollins’ “Doxy,” Fred Hersch’s “West Virginia Rose” and an unlikely take on Bobby Vinton’s “Blue Velvet.”
