Sunday Night at the Vanguard — Fred Hersch Trio
(Palmetto)

Sunday_Night_at_the_Vanguard_COVEROn the jazz pianist’s fourth live album, recorded at NYC’s famed Village Vanguard, Fred Hersch offers a pleasant collection of cerebral classics and originals. That Hersch, bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson have a quiet sound is not surprising to anyone that’s heard them. However, one might be hard pressed to find this hushed a version of Richard Rodgers’ “A Cockeyed Optimist” or The Beatles’ “For No One.” They are deftly balanced by a cover of Thelonius Monk’s “We See” and a solo original, “Valentine.”
