Bye Bye Blackbird — Frank Catalano/Jimmy Chamberlin/David Sanborn
(Ropeadope)

Bye-Bye-BlackbirdJazz tenor saxophonist Frank Catalano and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin recorded this tribute to saxophonists Von Freeman and Eddie Harris, Chicago-based musicians who mentored them. Alto saxophonist David Sanborn, appears on two of the albums six tracks, the title tune and “Sugar.” While Sanborn adds his unique flair to the proceedings, the rest of the album is worth hearing too. There’s a nice cover of Miles Davis “All Blues” and a song associated with Etta James, “At Last.”
