Sheltering in Place: Audiophile Edition

By Jim Kaplan

So, what have you been up to? More joy than sorrow I hope. I’ve spent my share of time watching YouTube videos with tears running down my face these last three plus months. But no matter how scary and uncertain things get, music is my solace. Now more than ever, by the time I finish listening to a record I have a smile on my face.

Not that things are bad here at RCN World HQ. Things are actually amazingly good. I almost feel guilty. I have been really enjoying the quiet. The pace. Doing little things well.

Plus, I’ve been to the “Schiiter” twice (Schiit Audio’s retail store). Once in early March, (BP — before pandemic) and again in late June. In March I picked up the Schiit Loki equalizer and in June I bought the Schiit Vidar amplifier to power the Magnepan .7 speakers I have been sheltering in place with. I heard about this fine equipment watching Steve Guttenberg’s Audiophilliac videos on YouTube as I shelter in place in the secret bunker at RCN World HQ. Now, before you start giving me a hard time for spending my stimulus check on stereo equipment and records — yeah, that’s pretty much how I spent my stimulus check — the Schiit Vidar amplifier is only $699. It’s so inexpensive that, in the audiophile world, it doesn’t even count.

How does it sound? It sounds as if you spent the kind of money that counts. It sounds like it gets along with the music. It sounds a lot better than I thought it would. It sounds like a keeper. And it runs cooler than the tube rig. Less sweaty listening in these summer months.

So, yeah, things are really good here. I hope things stay good with you too.

Happy listening.
