Doug MacLeod

“Prof.” Johnson’s first Blues for RR, recorded at famous Sky-walker Sound! 13 original songs showcase Doug MacLeod’s soulful vocals and trademark acoustic guitar sound, backed by Denny Croy on bass and Jimi Bott on drums.

Doug MacLeod’s, There’s a Time, just released on CD by Reference Recordings, is that rare nexus of a stunning recording of an amazing artist performing some beautiful songs. The setting was Skywalker Sound in Marin County. Quoting from RR’s press release:

There's a time“Making this album was different than any other one I’ve done in the past,” recalls MacLeod about the sessions. “They put Jimi, Denny and me on this huge soundstage at Skywalker Sound in Marin County and we sat around in a circle where we could see each other. We played live, no overdubs, just three guys playing some music together.”

Ya, well, “just there guys playing some music together” is all it takes to make this collection of acoustic blues songs really stand out. In terms of sound quality, song quality, performance quality and any other kind of quality, it doesn’t get much better than this. I kept thinking Muddy Waters Folk Singer. It’s that simple and it’s that good.

And get this, fellow vinyl junkies, Reference Recordings will release There’s a Time on a 200-gram, two-LP, 45 rpm set, half-speed mastered by Paul Stubblebine, pressed at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in late spring. A high-resolution digital HRx disc, and high-resolution and conventional downloads will also be available.

Reference Recordings is one of a few labels producing new original material at this, super high, audiophile quality level.
This isn’t just high quality sound. It’s great music sounding great. Possibly a future desert island disc. Available onlline at
