BEST MUSIC STORES OF L.A.

Amoeba Records Hollywoodcd traderCongratulations to CD Trader in Tarzana (18926 Ventura Boulevard, Tarzana, CA 91356, (818) 705-3544) and Amoeba Records in Hollywood (6400 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028, (323) 245-6400) for getting picked as the Best Record Stores in LA Weekly’s Best of LA issue. CD Trader is truly one of the better record stores in Southern California. It’s relatively huge and has twice as much used vinyl as most stores. I always find a few things in the “Just Arrived” bins. And Amoeba Hollywood, well that’s like going to church. A holy place. Overwhelming at times. But if I just remember to breathe while digging, I regain my mojo and become master of the bins.

CLASSIC BLUES CALENDAR

For the 10th year in a row, John Tefteller’s Blues Images presents their latest “Classic Blues Artwork from the 1920’s” Calendar with CD. Not only do you see the original artwork, but you can pop the CD into your player and hear the song. These calendars were made possible due to a massive find of original Blues material by Blues Images owner and one of the deepest blues collectors on the planet, John Tefteller. The Blues Calendar is available at select music and bookstores, or go to: bluesimages.com. The only calendar you need.

GALLERY RALF

Gallery Ralf (ralf.com) is the website that offers for sale the works of longtime Frank Zappa cover artist Cal Schenkel. If you know a few Zappa fans, you just figured out what you’re getting everyone for Christmas.

ANALOG PLANET

Check out analogplanet.com. It’s analog maven Michael Fremer and Stereophile Magazines website devoted to all things analog. Michael has a treasure trove of needed knowledge at that site. One of my favorites. It doesn’t get much deeper than this.

NOT JUST AN OPPORTUNITY TO QUOTE JAMES ELLORY

double naught spy carDouble Naught Spy Car’s new CD, Western Violence hits October 16 and I was blown away by this killer instrumental quartet’s third recording. Their press release describes it as Sweet, Snarling, Sardonic Mash Up Homage/Send Up of Bollywood, Stratocaster surf, Monkish jazz, Tiki Lounge Exotica, Prog Rock and Funk. “Double Naught Spy Car rocks, socks, rolls and sizzles,” said crime novelist James Ellroy. “This is a swinging, raunchy, bluesy, throaty, growling band. Double Naught Spy Car rules. Woof.”

Happy digging. Happy listening.

Peace and love,
Jim Kaplan
